How many therapy sessions will I need?
You don’t need a promised finish date to start. You do need to understand the plan and how it will be reviewed.
Long-term sessions from S$80

We explain your proposed arrangement.
Your appointment time is arranged with you.
There’s no single number of therapy sessions that suits everyone. A useful starting conversation covers what you want help with, how often to meet and how you’ll review the work. A package or funded allowance is not a prediction of how much support you’ll need. You can explore counselling before knowing the total number of appointments. MSF Family Assist: session number, frequency and funded care.
Separate session length, frequency and total number
These answer different questions. Session length is the time for one appointment. Frequency is the gap between appointments. The total number is how many appointments you have before you finish or pause. Four weekly appointments describe a schedule, not a promise that the concern will be resolved in four weeks. Counsilio’s Singapore sessions last 50–60 minutes; that does not set the frequency or total count.
Start with a change that would matter to you
“I want to stop replaying work conversations all evening” is a clearer starting point than “I should finish therapy quickly”. Or you may need space to think through a relationship decision. You don’t need a polished goal before enquiring. Describe what is difficult and what you hope would be different. NIMH includes goals and an expected timeframe among useful topics to discuss with a therapist. NIMH: understanding psychotherapy.
Make room to review the work
Discuss how you’ll notice progress and when to revisit the plan. A review can consider whether the sessions address what brought you there, whether the approach makes sense to you and what needs to change. It is a conversation, not an exam you have to pass. An early estimate can guide planning while remaining open to revision. NIMH: understanding psychotherapy.
Bring budget and time into the conversation early
If you can manage appointments only around shifts, caregiving or a particular monthly budget, say so at onboarding. Counsilio considers these constraints when matching you. The starting fee is S$80 for long-term sessions; it is not a total course price. The monthly-budget guide below helps with the arithmetic. If the proposed plan is hard to sustain, discuss another suitable arrangement rather than assuming that a longer gap will meet your needs.
A funded session limit is a separate decision
An employer benefit or public programme may fund a limited number of appointments. That limit is a payment condition, not a universal treatment length. For example, MSF’s Family Assist FAQ describes six funded sessions in its specific private-agency pilot, with paid continuation or a FAM-centre referral if more support is needed. That is a family-counselling programme rule, not a Counsilio offer or a standard for all therapy in Singapore. MSF Family Assist: session number, frequency and funded care.
If the work feels unclear, raise it
You might say, “We’ve had several sessions, but I’m not sure what we’re working towards.” NIMH advises discussing concerns when therapy does not seem to be helping after a reasonable period; a different approach or professional may be considered. You can raise concerns without waiting for a particular session count. If the match doesn’t work, you can also speak to Counsilio directly for help finding a suitable person. Explore a plan with Counsilio
Counsilio speaks with you, understands your concerns and requirements, including budget, and connects you with a suitable counsellor. Counsellor quality, matching and clear information about the proposed arrangement are our responsibility. You can explain that you’re unsure about the commitment and would like to understand the next step. WhatsApp starts an enquiry; the appointment and proposed arrangement are explained separately.
Questions about getting support
Does long-term counselling mean I must commit indefinitely?
Long-term describes the ongoing care Counsilio offers. It does not tell you the total number of appointments you will need. Counsilio explains the proposed care and payment arrangement before you decide, and the number of sessions can be discussed as the work progresses.
Is six sessions the usual length of therapy?
There is no universal count. Six may describe a particular programme or funded allowance. Your own plan depends on your needs and how the work is going; the allowance alone cannot establish that.
Can I start if I don’t know how many sessions I can afford?
You can explain your budget during Counsilio’s personal onboarding. We consider it when matching you and explaining the proposed arrangement. Exploring a plan is not the same as agreeing to an unspecified course.
What if I want to pause or finish?
Bring this into the conversation with your counsellor and, where helpful, Counsilio. Explain what is leading you to consider a pause or ending, and discuss your next steps and the applicable appointment arrangements.
